The stand-alone version of the Population Clock is ideal for classroom use and can help generate a stimulating and engaging lesson starter. There is no need for Internet access and it does not need installing. It can be run from disk or any directory on a single computer or network. The download is exceptionally small (just 8kb - that's smaller than this single web page). You may also need a Java plug-in to run the Population Clock.

Download Instructions

Requirements
The stand-alone version of the Population Clock requires a Java plug-in to be installed on your computer. If the web version of the Population Clock ran on your computer, you may already have a suitable Java plug-in installed. You can check whether you have the necessary Java software installed by going to http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html, or download the Java Web Start plug-in from Sun's web site at http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/demos.html . You can also manually select a copy of the plug-in to download from Sun MicroSystems at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html and click on the relevant download label in the column titled JRE that is for your operating system.

As the Population Clock relies on the computer's internal clock to display the up-to-the-minute best estimate of the world's population, there will be differences from one computer to the next if the time and/or date of each computer is different. If the date or time is significantly wrong. the population estimate displayed will be inaccurate.

All feedback welcome - send it to internetgeographer@hotmail.com. I would be particularly interested in all reports of how the population clock has been used in schools and with what effect.

If you have any difficulties using The Internet Geographer's Population Clock, please send an email to internetgeographer@hotmail.com.
